SEPTEMBER 2013 2 Strathfield Scene WELCOME 5 MINUTES WITH... THERE HAVE BEEN A NUMBER OF DOG ATTACKS IN RECENT MONTHS. HAVE YOU EVER DEALT WITH A DANGEROUS DOG? I have in the past. It was pretty scary but nobody got hurt. In cases like that you can give it something to sedate it and then you do what you need to do. HAS THIS AFFECTED YOUR JOB? No, it very rarely happens. The dogs that come in are usually fine, we haven’t had anything dangerous happen since I’ve been here, which has been around seven months. We’ve had a number of frightened dogs come in; we just have to be careful and calm them. HAVE YOU EVER BEEN BITTEN BY A DOG? When I was learning to train them, I had a few incidents, but the key to avoid being bitten is to know how to deal with them and not stress them out – this can be done by talking to them softly, making slow movements and don’t stare. WHAT’S THE WORST OR HARDEST BREED TO FIND A HOME FOR? I don’t know if it’s a breed, but more a case of whether or not they are an energetic dog that needs a lot of training. Black dogs are harder than fluffy white dogs to rehome, because they tend not to photograph well. WHAT HAPPENS TO THE DOGS ONCE THEY’VE BEEN CAUGHT? The council brings in the dog and we immediately scan him/her for a microchip. If it has a chip we look up and contact the owner. We make sure we give the animal every opportunity to get back to its owner. If the dog is not chipped, it stays for seven days and then on the eighth day it moves into the looking-for-a-home section. We desex him/her, check for heartworm, insert a microchip and vaccinate them. After that we post images of the dog on our website and our Facebook page and help find it a new home.
