Strathfield Scene 19 www.ourstrathfield.com.au life “Listing offers statutory protection to buildings, and helps us protect the streetscape and conservation areas." – Roger Brook By Sarah Macklin I t’s not just grand mansions that are protected by being listed on Strathfield Council’s heritage register – wooden cottages, old milestones, railway bridges, viaducts and war memorials are also pre- served for future generations. “ The listing offers statutory pro- tection to buildings, and helps us protect the streetscape and conser- vation areas,” said the council’s strategic planning co-ordinator Rog- er Brook. “ We also have a heritage grant scheme for owners who perhaps want to improve their front facades, under which owners can apply for a variety of works,” added Brook. “As well, the council also runs its own Heritage Awards each year around May to recognise out- standing developments in listed buildings.” People who wish to improve their listed homes can also gain a free one- hour consultation with the council’s heritage advisory service. This can help clients choose appropriate paint colours and tiles to renovate while maintaining the period char- acter of their home. Brook said there were so many buildings on the register that it was difficult to choose a personal favour- ite, though he finds the conservation area around Redmyre Road very at- tractive. “Applicants can still develop listed properties, and the scheme fosters residents’ pride,” he added. Just one addition has been made to the latest draft list of heritage properties – a two-storey shopfront in inter-war classical style next to the Horse and Jockey hotel at 72-76 Parramatta Road, Homebush. Other buildings protected in the draft heritage list under Strathfield Council’s Local Environment Plan include Federation shops, weather- board cottages, the water pumping station at Underwood Road, Home- bush, and most churches in the area. The race to preserve our past Have you renovated a historical property recently, or updated your garden and facade to fit in with Strathfield’s heritage streetscape? If so, you could have the chance to enter Strathfield Council’s annual heritage awards, announced in May. And your house doesn’t have to be on the official heritage list to win. Judges are looking for people who have either enhanced a historic property or have built something sympathetic to the character of the area. The awards are announced and made each year in five categories. These are for restoration, renovation or additions to an existing building; colour scheme; new building; landscaping; or other works such as conservation plans. Last year’s winners included Theo Polizogopoulos, for his sympathetic restoration of his Federation-style home at 46 Dean Street. Winners in other categories included the Horse and Jockey Hotel in Homebush, St Anne’s Anglican Church for the renovation of its lych gate and streetscape, and a private home at 111 Homebush Road for landscaping. Nominations are now open.
