Talk about talented: language students shine Strathfield Scene 19 education www.ourstrathfield.com.au Of the nine students who topped the state in language courses, six studied at the Saturday School of Community Languages. By Bernadette Chua Students from Strathfield schools have achieved some of the state’s top marks in language subjects in the 2011 HSC. Three schools had students finish in the top 10 spots for their respective courses – Strathfield Girls High, the Australian International Academy and the Saturday School of Community Languages in Albert Street. Of the nine students who topped the state in language courses, six studied at the Saturday school, which is operated by the Department of Education and caters for students from non- government and government schools as well as TAFE colleges. Supervisor Evelyn Mark says the school, which offers courses in Chinese, Korean, Croatian, Ukrainian, Italian and Hindi, allows students to study languages not offered in the regular curriculum. Mark says the school provides a “wonderful opportunity” for students from non-English- speaking backgrounds to continue their study free of charge. “Other schools that offer the opportunity to undertake these studies outside of school hours usually charge. “Our students are able to come along without paying anything and they get a terrific service. We’ve got wonderful teachers.” Teachers must undergo rigorous training before and during the school year and all must be approved by the Department of Education. “ We have some excellent staff who prepare the teaching and learning material really well for the students. A lot of professional development takes place during the year.” Mark says the students are highly motivated and attend classes on Saturday, when most of their peers are enjoying their day off. “ We actually cover a whole week’s curriculum on a Saturday morning.” Anastasiya Matantseva ArAbic continuers Arwa Abu Sardaneh Australian International Academy, Strathfield Campus ukrAniAn continuers Anastasiya Matantseva Saturday School of Community Languages, Strathfield Campus chinese bAckground speAkers Xiyi Li Placed 3rd Saturday School of Community Languages, Strathfield Campus Wanyi Chen Placed 10th Strathfield Girls High School croAtiAn continuers Antonia Boshovic Placed 2nd Saturday School of Community Languages, Strathfield Campus english As A second lAnguAge Ireena Ghimire Placed 10th Strathfield Girls High School koreAn bAckground speAkers Kim Suji Placed 2nd Saturday School of Community Languages Bit Na Kim Placed 3rd Saturday School of Community Languages ukrAiniAn continuers Alevtina Pyevyen Placed 2nd Saturday School of Community Languages, Katya Maria Hamiwka Placed 3rd Saturday School of Community Languages first in the state top in course self defense and fitness for all CCC for Children • Courage • Confidence • Concentration why hCA? • Get the ultimate body workout to increase strength, endurance and flexibility • Stress reduction and increased concentration • authentic curriculum with easy-to- learn and effective techniques “1 hour on the treadmill will only help when you can run away” Hapkido College of AuStrAliA www.hapkidocollege.com.au ☎ Call 9747-0822 Taekwondo World Martial Arts 1st floor, 10 – 12 Parramatta Rd, Homebush Opp the imo Car Wash on George St, North Strathfield www.tkdworld.com.au Learn Self Defence Martial Arts for Kids Senior classes, High School and Group Training Australia’s Premier Taekwondo Club Fully accredited coaches 2 weeks training & NIKE Uniform FREE on Joining Confidence Discipline Concentration Learn CALL NOW 9743 5757 or 0412 851 302 Eat local use our comprehensive food directory to plan your perfect night out / food-guide guide
