Strathfield Scene 15 www.ourstrathfield.com.au 20 years on Early January Taxi driver Wade Frankum (pictured) hatches a plan to “wipe people out” in a shooting spree. The 33-year-old's original target is almost certainly North Strathfield railway station. Police later find a copy of Bret Easton Ellis’s novel American Psycho at his North Strathfield unit. He buys a Chinese-made military SKK rifle and a large quantity of ammunition, plus a 25cm Bowie knife. august 17, 1.10pm: Frankum goes to North Strathfield station, where he buys a single ticket for Strathfield/ Burwood. Stationmaster Clive Young notices Frankum is acting suspiciously. Frankum tells him: “You had better go home, Clive.” 1.48pm Frankum boards a train to Strathfield. He walks to Strathfield Plaza and sits in The Coffee Pot, drinking several cups of coffee. He is dressed in denim, wearing a beanie on his freshly shaved head. An army surplus duffel bag is on the ground next to his table. Two teenage girls are sitting behind him. 3.30pm Without provocation, Frankum pulls his Bowie knife from the duffel bag and repeatedly stabs Roberta Armstrong, 15, one of the girls in the cafe, in the back. She dies of her wounds. a fEw minutEs latEr Frankum pulls out the SKK rifle and begins shooting people around the cafe, killing four diners and injuring more. He then shoots the cafe’s owner, George Mavris, dead. Frankum flees into the main mall, killing another victim – his last. Police later tell the coroner’s hearing Frankum had not been provoked by anything that had happened in the plaza – or anything he overheard. “His intentions during the attack were clear. He meant to murder as many people as possible,” Detective Inspector Robert Godden said. From the mall Frankum runs on to the roof of the multi-storey car park, where he confronts Catherine Noyes as she is getting into her Holden station wagon. Threatening her with the semi-automatic, Frankum demands she drive him to Enfield. “His eyes had a glazed look about them,” she said later. “He was very agitated. He was aggressive and very angry.” As they are driving from the car park Frankum tells Noyes to stop the car, apparently after hearing police sirens. Before climbing out, he offers a “heartfelt apology”, which she believes means he is about to shoot her. Instead, Frankum gets out of the car, places the gun under his chin or in his mouth (eyewitness accounts differ) and pulls the trigger. Noyes drives down the ramp from the car park. Police officers rush to her aid. The whole incident lasts about 10 minutes. Seven people are dead and six seriously injured – none of them known to Frankum. thE dEad patricia rowe, 37, of Sussex Inlet Carole dickinson, 47, of Greenacre roberta “Bo” armstrong, 15, of Strathfield george mavris, 51, of Burwood rachelle milburn, 17, of Wallsend Joyce nixon, 61, of Sussex Inlet robertson Kan hock Voon, 51, of Croydon countdown to murder Friendship Fair United Indian Associations Inc.
