SSC Newspaper : June 2011
2 Strathfield Scene june 2011 The Strathfield Scene’s website www.ourstrathfield.com.au is your chance to keep up with local events – it’s all about Strathfield. HOW DID YOU GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHY? I’ve always taken photographs but it’s only been recently that I’ve been getting into professional photography. I had a lifechanging experience which made me realise I should live my life the way I want. WHAT HAPPENED? I was bitten on my thumb by a white-tailed spider, my hand turned septic and there was a risk it would be amputated! CRIKEY! WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE TURNING TO PHOTOGRAPHY? I made an independent documentary and I also worked in advertising for a number of years as a copywriter. STRATHFIELD’S IN YOUR NEW BOOK OF SUBURBAN PHOTOS. HOW LONG DID YOU SPEND IN THE AREA? Three days, four hours a day. HOW DID YOU GET THE IDEA? I’ve always been a big international traveller but I was a stranger in my own city. I spent a week on each suburb, photographing and editing. WHAT APPEALED TO YOU ABOUT STRATHFIELD? The old buildings and the architecture of the area attracted me. The area also has a lot of beautiful school grounds. WHAT WAS MOST INTERESTING? All the Korean culture. I photographed lots of Korean shops and Korean layered cake. 52 Suburbs: A Search For Beauty In The ‘Burbs (Louise Hawson, New South Books, $39.99).
