When the Sydney Balalaika Orchestra (SBO) performs its repertoire of Russian folk music in Strathfield later this month, there will be a talented local musician among their ranks. Robin Brawley, 23, of Albert Road, who plays bass with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra will now play bass balalaika with the SBO. Brawley, a non-Russian, will join a lineup of 14 different nationalities who make up the SBO, including six members who still speak Russian. The SBO is considered one of the finest orchestras in Australia and has twice toured Russia, performing widely in the country. The band practices at homebush Boys high school every Tuesday night where Brawley went to school for Years 7 to 10, before competing his education at the Sydney Conservatorium. he has almost completed a Bachelor of Music at the conservatorium. The band grew out of homebush Boys. Andrew Smith, head of the school’s music department, was a core member of the Russian folk band and encouraged Brawley to take up the bass with the SBO. Brawley comes from a family of talented musicians in Strathfield. his father neil is the Principal emeritus Double Bassist in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and his mother helen is an accomplished cellist. Strathfield Square will thrill to the sounds of music from around the globe, ranging from pop to Cuban, rhythm and blues and reggae in the weeks leading up to the festive season. Strathfield businesses, with Strathfield Council and the Chamber of Commerce are supporting a series of day-time and evening performances called Music @ the Square. The music program, now in its third year, will kick off with a performance from the touring South American band JJ Son Con Idabelis. Directly from Santiago de Cuba, this world-renowned ensemble presents the classic songs of great Cuban artists including Compay Segundo, The Buena Vista Social Club and the legendary Miguel Matamoros. Featuring vocalists Idalbelis, Jorge Ferrer-Valego, Jose Angelo Garcia-Vasquez and the master of the armonico, el Papi Juan Vautisti Fuentes-Jainza. JJ Son are the masters of authentic Cuban Salsa and are in Strathfield during the final leg of their 2010 Australian tour. Other acts will include the indie pop music band The Former Love Pirates and classical ensemble nikolopoulos Quartet, led by local musician George nikolopoulos. The Strathfield Musical Society, Burwood Girls high School , the Ashfield on the Block Community Band and the hitmakers, playing hits from the 1950s to the 1990s, will also feature. Local restaurants will be open for dinner before the music starts.
