What is the best thing about your job? being able to work with a large variety of the freshest produce and inspecting the fruit. you can find some weird things sometimes. What has been the oddest situation you’ve been in? i once found a brown snake in a box of bananas. i didn’t know what to do so i called a wildlife conservation group to getridofthebox.itgavemea massive fright. hoW did you become a quality insurance officer? i grew up in a very traditional family where my father owned a fruit shop so the whole extended family was involved in the operation of the shop. hoW long have you been doing this for? on and off for about 17 years. What Were you doing prior to this job? i was still working for my father’s fruit shop. so produce is a big part of my life. What’s your favourite part about Working and living so close to strathfield? there is a strong community that co-exists here and i’m proud that our local council implements lots of activities for the residents. i feel like strathfield is a pretty together sort of place. LIBRARy SeRvICeS A home library service is available to residents unable to visit the Strathfield Library due to disability or lack of mobility. volunteers deliver pre-selected materials to residents on a fortnightly or monthly basis. There is also a community bus service to the library on the first Wednesday of each month. A volunteer travels on the bus to assist residents. For further information contact Strathfield Library and Information Centre on 8762 0222. FRIenDSHIp GRoup Come along to a weekly Friendship Group at St Thomas’ Church Hall in enfield. Justice of the peace services available at the Strathfield Library every Wednesday between 11am and 12pm and on the fourth Tuesday of the month from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. SuppoRT oLDeR peopLe older residents are being encouraged to put themselves on a police register. The service is free and confidential. every fortnight, a volunteer telephones older people to check on their wellbeing. Contact Flemington Local Area police Command on 9646 8691. CReATe SAFeR GARDenS Garden Aid (www.iwna. com.au) is a non-profit project assisting financially disadvantaged and socially isolated people who are frail or living with a disability to convert their gardens into more low maintenance areas. The service uses volunteer labour. It is not a professional gardening service. The service costs $25 per day, plus tip fees. There is a waiting list. Call 9799 5099 or email ga@ iwna.com.au. HomeWoRk HeLp Strathfield Library offers homework help for school students from 3pm to 5pm on weekdays. Trained librarians area available to assist you in finding the information you need. Just ask one of our staff. RoTARy CLuB SeSSIonS The Strathfield Rotary Club meets every Wednesday at 6.30pm at the Strathfield Golf Club (84 Centenary Drive; 9642 0326).
