2 Strathfeld Scene "I commend the newest member of our community, the Strathfeld Scene, for celebrating the history of Strathfeld since 1885” – Virginia Judge, Member for Strathfeld, Fair Trading and Arts Minister WELCOME NEWS 3 COUNCIL NEWS 6 ThE BIg ISSUE Our growing population 8 COmmENT What’s on your mind 10 125 YEarS YOUNg Our story plus 20 questions on the history of Strathfeld 12 SpOrT How the World Cup is flling our football boots 15 Speaking up for Strath eld Welcome to the new Strath eld Scene -- a true community newspaper, and a fresh voice for our municipality. It 's ironic that we publish in the week of our 125th anniversary. ose who lived here a century and a quarter ago were a strong, civic-minded group determined to have a say in the running of their own a airs. ey wanted to ensure that their views were heard when issues a ecting their locality were decided. Not much has changed. To d a y, consultation and freely available information is even more vital to keep communities informed and engaged. But why, you may ask, do we need another newspaper? e answer is that, despite the high number of publications and websites around us, none speaks solely for Strath eld, a community of 36,000 in an area earmarked for profound change. As our story and analysis on housing suggests, we will be asked to shoulder a heavy burden as Sydney's population continues to expand. Strath eld Council is our publishing partner. Councillors approved a rm commitment in their 2020 vision statement to community communications. e Scene will help ful l that commitment. Our website, www.ourstrath eld.com.au, allows local businesses to talk to local customers, and will also encourage your contributions. We really do want to hear from you! So send us your stories, opinions, pictures and ideas. Share what's on your mind. ese are, a er all, your publications. Speak up!
